Mom serving time for 3-year-old daughter's death gets sentence reduced

Atelia Hunt's sentence was reduced to 17 years.

Atelia Hunt was serving a 20 year sentence on a Homicide By Child Abuse in the death of her 3-year-old daughter, Edna Trinity Hunt, but her sentence has now been reduced to 17 years.

Hunt pleaded guilty to the charge in June of 2013. Her boyfriend, Michael Huckabee, was found guilty of Homicide By Child Abuse, Criminal Sexual Conduct, Inflicting Great Bodily Harm On A Child and Unlawful Conduct Toward A Child that same month in a jury trial. He's serving two life sentences.

Fourth Circuit Solicitors Will Rogers said Hunt cooperated with the state in the prosecution of Huckabee. Rogers said as part of Hunt's plea agreement and her cooperation, the state would request a sentence reduction for her.

Judge Michael Baxley reduced her sentence Thursday.

She has to serve at least 85% of her sentence before she's eligible for parole.

Edna Trinity Hunt died in October of 2011 from unusual complications of untreated wounds and multiple inflicted traumas, according to the Marlboro County Coroner's Office.
