Man who police say faked death arrested in Florida

Harvey Cox was arrested Thursday in Silver Spring, FL.

Harvey Legrand Cox was arrested in Silver Springs, Florida Thursday.

Cox was the focus of a search off the coast of Murrells Inlet by the U.S. Coast Guard and local agencies in January. Cox's boat was found in the grass about one mile north of the Murrells Inlet Public Boat Landing. His Toyota truck and boat trailer were also found at the landing.

But after several days of searching the ocean and the inlet, someone reported seeing Cox in Florence, where he's from. It was then revealed that he was wanted on a charge of Committing a Lewd Act Upon a Minor. Investigators issued an arrest warrant for Cox in January which alleges that between July 2008 and January 2011, Cox committed lewd acts against a 10 year old girl.

In a news release, Captain Brett Camp, captain of investigations for the Florence County Sheriff's Office, said, "We would like to thank the U.S. Marshals Service and the Marion County (Florida) Sheriff's Office for their work in apprehending Cox. The Marshals Service has been working on this case daily since January when Cox fled Florence County, and their dedication has paid off tremendously for us."

The Florence County Sheriff's Office will attempt to extradite Cox to South Carolina to face the pending charges.
