Man arrested in connection with 2013 deadly hit and run

UPDATE: On March 15, 2016, Fowler pleaded guilty to obstructing justice and hit and run involved in accident with death. He was sentenced to eight years in jail suspended to three years in jail and five years of probation. On March 18, 2016 the charge of accessory after the fact of a felony was dismissed.

A Whiteville man has been arrested in connection with a hit and run wreck in 2013that left one man dead.

Slade Christian Fowler, 22, has been charged with accessory after the fact to a felony, hit and run involving death or personal injury and obstructing justice, according to J. Reuben Long Detention Center records.

Tyshawn Johnson, 20, of Marion, was killed when the moped he was riding on as a passenger was hit from behind by another vehicle. That driver of that other vehicle left the scene.

Johnson died at the hospital from his injuries.

Since the incident on Aug. 17, 2013, the South Carolina Highway Patrol has been looking for the person driving a 2005 - 2012 white or silver Nissan Pathfinder with damage to the left front of the vehicle and a missing left front wheel well cover.

According to an updated incident report from the SCHP released today, Fowler was the driver of the vehicle in question.

Fowler was originally arrested in New Hanover County, N.C. on a fugitive warrant. He was extradited to Horry County on Thursday, according to Cpl. Sonny Collins, with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
