Arrest made after man shot and killed in Darlington neighborhood

Darlington Police Sgt. Kim Nelson says a man was shot and killed on Kirven Street in Darlington just before 10pm Tuesday.

Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee has identified the victim as Gary Evans Walker, 43, of Darlington.

Walker died from a gunshot wound and Coroner Hardee ruled the death a homicide.

An autopsy will be performed Wednesday.

Joey Gibson, 24, has been arrested and charged in connection to the deadly shooting, according to Sgt. Nelson.

Nelson said more arrests could be made.

Walker's relative said he had been with Walker just before the shooting. He said he got a call from a friend saying his relative had been gunned down in the middle of the street.

He said he can't understand why anyone would want Walker dead.

Walker was found lying in the middle of Kirven Street.

Neighbors said they heard between six to nine shots fired, and the next thing they knew dozens of police and deputies swarmed the neighborhood.

"The only thing I heard was around six, six gunshots. My neighbor asked me was those fire crackers I told her no, they were gunshots. And I said we'll be hearing sirens in a minute. And maybe about a few minutes, there were a bunch of sirens, police men," said Myrtle Travis.

Some in the neighborhood said they hear gunshots all the time, and they've complained to police and city council members about what's going on in their community.

They said police have stepped up patrols in recent weeks, but violence is getting out of hand.

Sgt. Nelson asks anyone with information to call the Darlington Police Department at (843) 398-4026.
