South Carolina offers holiday from sales tax this weekend
South Carolina is offering shoppers a sales tax break this weekend.
The sales-tax holiday extends from 12:01 a.m. Friday to midnight Sunday. The holiday removes state and local sales taxes from clothes, computers and many other back-to-school items.
The state tax rate is 6 percent, but local taxes will also be removed, meaning shoppers could save up to 8.5 percent.
Shoppers are expected to save an estimated $2.25 million overall, according to the Board of Economic Advisors.
While the weekend is touted as savings for back-to-school items, the list of exempt items can be confusing. For a list of exempt and non-exempt items from the Department of Revenue, click here.
