One million signed up to be organ donors in SC

South Carolina's Organ and Tissue Donor Registry says just over one million people have registered to become organ, eye and tissue donors in South Carolina, according to LifePoint, an organization that handles organ procurement for most counties in South Carolina.

The registry launched at the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles in December 2008.

According to LifePoint, about one quarter of people who visit the SCDMV also register as donors.

South Carolina's donor designation rate, 22%, is roughly half of the national average of states with donor registries.

This year the Donate Life South Carolina, LifePoint and the Heather Trew Foundation are sponsoring a Donate Life Duel.

Fans of both Clemson and South Carolina will compete to see who signs up more donors. The Donate Life duel ends November, 23, at midnight.
