CMC Foundation kicks off Capri Sun Drive

Conway Medical Center Foundation is holding its 2nd Annual "Together, We Can Fill the Van" Capri Sun Drive for the CMC Smart Snacks program during the week of November 11-15.

CMC Smart Snacks provides healthy weekend snacks for K-5 students who qualify for the federal subsidized lunch program. Smart Snacks serves 775 children at four schools, Conway Elementary, Homewood Elementary, Midland Elementary and Waccamaw Elementary.

Smart Snacks has been in operation since 2005. The program has provided over $267,000 in provisions for children in Horry County. The total funding for this year's Smart Snacks program is projected to be at least $59,500. Of this total cost, almost $10,000 is spent on Capri Sun alone. The CMC Foundation underwrites the expense of the food through donations.

Each Friday these children, selected by their school counselors and with approval from their parents, are given a sack filled with easy-to-open, no-preparation required food to nourish them until they return to school. The sack includes a variety of any four nutritious, nonperishable food items.

"Together, We Can Fill the Van" is being held in an effort to offset the 18% portion of the food expense that is spent on Capri Sun. With the extra money, 126 more children could be fed each week during the school year.

Drop off Capri Sun boxes at the CMC front visitors lobby located at 300 Singleton Ridge Rd, at the Conway Wellness and Fitness Center lobby, at 2369 Cypress Circle, or at the reception area of any of the 18 Conway Physician Group Offices. Also, on November 14 from 12-3 p.m. and November 15 from 7-10 a.m. bring in 4 boxes of Capri Sun to the CMC Healthreach office at 2367 Cypress Circle and receive a free flu shot.
