Haley suggests leaving make up days up to school boards

Public schools across South Carolina, including those in our area, have been forced to cancel school several times over the past couple of weeks for winter weather.

Many school districts have make up days built into the calendar, but when those days run out they must receive approval from the state general assembly to waive the missed days, or the districts must make them up.

Governor Nikki Haley is suggesting the general assembly allow districts to make their own decisions.

Haley says, "my suggestion to the legislature is to propose one statewide bill that allows school districts to decide what they feel is best for each of their own districts."

The Horry County School Board recently voted to waive two make up days they are waiting to hear back from the general assembly.
