Confederate Memorial Day to be observed in SC

T oday is Confederate Memorial Day in South Carolina.

It's an official holiday to honor those who died fighting for the Confederate States of Americaduring the Civil War.

Graves in the soldiers burial ground in Magnolia Cemetery in Charlestonare being adorned with Confederate flags today.

Observances were also held last weekend at Columbia's Elmwood Cemetery and at the Statehouse.

Last Friday, there was a reading at the Statehouse of the Roll of the Dead, which includes the names of the more than 18,000 South Carolina soldiers who died in the Civil War.

Eight states observe Confederate Memorial Day in all, including North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas.

On the Grand Strand, the day is striking a nerve with some.

The state General Assembly is in recess to mark the day and the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles will also be closed in observance of the state holiday.
