Coastal Carolina University holds spring graduation

CONWAY, S.C. (WPDE) - Saturday morning Coastal Carolina University held its spring commencement ceremony. It began at 8:30 a.m. at Brooks Stadium. Nearly 800 students participated in the ceremony.
U.S. Senator Tim Scott gave the address. He told students "to maximize your potential, you have to exit your comfort zone," according to a press release.
He also receive
an honorary degree, Doctor of Public Service.
A group of CCU students started an online petition to have him removed as graduation speaker. Citing his vote against a bill designed to curb violence against women while representing a state with one of the highest domestic violence rates in the nation. Despite nearly 600 signatures, Scott was not taken off the program.
State Senator Raymond E. Cleary also receive
honorary degree, Doctor of Public Service.
