Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum stopped through Horry County Saturday evening.

He's among several GOP candidates vying for the Republican party nomination. Santorum spoke to a crowd of 50 at the Lakeside Convention Center in North Myrtle Beach. His campaign aides say this is Santorum's fifth visit to the area.

"People have a familiarity with me and we think we can do well here," says Santorum. He continues, "You've seen me probably here more than anybody else. Horry County is a very, very important county in the state and in a Republican primary. Lots of folks here in Horry County who are from my neck of the woods-Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey."

Under the current Republican primary schedule, South Carolina's primary is set for January 28.

Since 1980, South Carolina has been the state to win for Republicans in the primaries, because the front runner in the Palmetto State has gone on to win the nomination.
