Retired Air Force Col. Gary West and 16 American flags are making their way to Key West, Fla.

On Sept. 7, West stopped at the Georgetown Veterans Memorial to hold a flag raising and folding ceremony.

On Aug. 1, West got on his bicycle in Maine for a 2,500 mile Patriot Honor Ride.

The ride raises scholarship money and awareness for Folds of Honor, an organization that supports families of fallen and disabled veterans.

"I wanted to give back. I wanted to do something to bless others, so I came up with this idea and looked for an organization that I could come alongside and use my experience as a combat fighter pilot to provide a voice to some meaningful group that is doing some powerful things," he said.

Each flag is dedicated to a Folds of Honor recipient family and flown in different states.

At the end of the ride, the flags will be given to the families.

After traveling for 60 days, West will arrive in Key West on Oct. 1, which is his 60th birthday.
