Local teen is winner in History Channel contest

Thirteen-year-old Maggie Harrill of Bennettsville loves the History Channel show, "American Pickers," and she loves the stories told by her grandfather, Bryant Harrill, about his experiences in World War II and the Korean War.

So when she decided to enter the History Channel's Kid Pickers Pick & Tell National Student Contest, it wasn't hard for her to choose a topic.

This contest invites young people from across the nation to find an old item - perhaps from a flea market or antique store - and write about its history. Maggie chose a 1950 Simplex Servi-Cycle she found in her grandfather's machine shop on Highway 38 South.

She recently learned that she won second place among all the entries that were submitted. For her efforts, she will receive a scholarship and a trip for two to Nashville, TN, this summer where she will, among other things, meet Mike Wolfe from "American Pickers" and tour the Grand Ole Opry.
