Birmingham Police confirm a "large aircraft crash"

UPDATE: BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A federal aviation official says a large UPS cargo plane has crashed near an airport in Birmingham, Alabama.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman says the A300 plane crashed on approach to the airport before dawn today.

The plane was en route from Louisville, Ky., to Birmingham as UPS Flight 1354.

A spokeswoman for Birmingham's airport authority says the plane crashed on the outskirts of Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.

The area is outside the perimeter fence of the airport and the crash hasn't affected airport operations.
