Barefoot Swing Bridge to be closed beginning Monday

The Barefoot Swing Bridge will be closed beginning at 6:00a.m. Monday morning.

Starting at 6:00 a.m. Monday, the in North Myrtle Beach will be closed. Contractors are painting the bridge because the paint on it right now is lead based.

The bridge will close to traffic for up to 49 days while crews complete the painting. That's January 16th.

"It needs to be done. We have a bid that's 907,000 dollars which is very low and we just got to move forward," City Spokesman Pat Dowling said.

In the summer months, drivers make more than 9,000 trips over the bridge that connects the Barefoot Resort area to Barefoot Landing and Highway 17 in North Myrtle Beach.

Some residents have been upset that they'll have to take a 15 minute detour to get out of the back of the development. That entrance is off of Watertower Road. Drivers can access that directly from Highway 31. The city council has said the structure of the bridge is stable and has passed all inspections.
